welcome back to klango. What to do with the old klango archived posts?

Hello everyone. This is the klango admin, and I want to say welcome back to all of you.
I have a question for all of you. As you see, the old klango archive was merged into klango, currently for the german and english communities. I am aware though that some of the posts are pretty spammy, and also of course all of them are at least 7 years old. What do you think, should we let them stay here and just clean up the spam? Or archive them all?

Thanks for beeing here.

We should absolutely preserve them. I am a preservationist so that's my opinion. I feel its important to keep history, not delete it.

Yes same, I like looking at the old postes.

If you're going to preserve them, make them read only.

You don't want people replying to threads from 7 years ago.

I saw someone do that to a 13 year old thread recently on Applevis, and all they did was ask a question related to an article on a blog that is no longer around.

they are interesting

I'd say keep please. Ididn't try this before, so I'd be interested what was happening.

Oh, but some of these threads remain relevant. I've been able to respond to a fair few of them with my own personal thoughts. It would be sad to have them read-only as I feel like I can still contribute to them with knwoledge and experience.

also, could we Poles get our archives back?
and could I be the admin of the group so it has some administration? plus, I could write the name properly as it's not written correctly.

I would say release the old archives and the program itself as it was in 2018. Maybe release it on the Internet Archive or something. It is important that we have those things for the sake of preservation.

Re: welcome back to klango. What to do with the old klango archived posts?

Hmm, maybe make a poll where people will respond to this question and see if those posts are going to be archived?

Re: welcome back to klango. What to do with the old klango archived posts?

erm, polls don't work I think.

As many have already said, archive the threads. It will be better that way, preserving what was there. Surprised the archive stayed in tact. I was here around 2012 to maybe 2014 or 2015, and I saw so many things from my younger self. And I'd rather not lose those memories, mine and many others.

Re: welcome back to klango. What to do with the old klango archived posts?

It may already be a little too late to preserve the archive as it was, because I'm starting to see people adding new replies to some of the old threads.
Personally, I've never been a fan of reviving threads that have been inactive for years. If someone has something genuinely relevant to add, that's one thing, but it can be quite jarring to read through a discussion from 2018 and suddenly find that the next reply is from 2026.
Reddit actually has an interesting approach to this. Communities have the option of automatically archiving posts after six months, at which point they remain available to read but can no longer be commented on or voted on. I think something along those lines would have made sense for an archive such as this: preserve the old discussions, but make them read-only.
AppleVis recently had a thread revived after about 13 years simply because someone wanted to ask a question about a blog mentioned in it — a blog that no longer even exists. That's the sort of situation where I really wish people would check the dates before replying.
I think this is one of the problems with mixing archived material into the live forum without making the archived threads read-only. Instead of remaining a snapshot of the discussions as they originally happened, we're now starting to see very old conversations unexpectedly becoming active again.

Re: welcome back to klango. What to do with the old klango archived posts?

Hello everyone, Jason here, kb3icc, I have read all of your posts, all sound great.
I think we should archive the old threads, you can archive them somewhere and then all of us can download and preserve the, ourselves, also.
you can zip them up as well and upload them to a platform where they will be preserved forever and people can download the old archives if interested. Also I am surprised how they were able to stay in preservation for so long. I was around when klango, first came out which was around those years of 2012 and earlier when the program was runnning by the original devs, this program, well developed way ahead of its time, that's why Iam glad this program is back it was the future back then and now, we are living the future now. so I am for proserving the archives. we can have polls, it's a way, people can vote on the issue.
