now this is a discussion you don't see in klango: Thoughts on game clones?

Right. So. It has been this trend among audiogame devs to clone different games, notably STW (survive the wild), and some other games. What are your thoughts on these game clones?

I personaly don't know if we should be talking about this but I'm not the dev so. But anyways, I don't kare if something is a clone or not, I play it for fun.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me if it's a clone or not, though usually they get taken down. There have been enough clones in this community to seriously make people who work hard on their actual games hesitate to develop, and I understand that, but in my experience, it's been hit or miss.

I think there is a difference betwen concept clones and literal clones. Concept clones are ok if the oreginal gets credited. With clones that come from stolen source how ever, the worst thing is most people don't clarify that they are not the oreginal creator and claim they did everything. That's really disrespectful for the oreginal developer.

for me, I personally dont give a shit on weather a game is a clone. its the quolity of the game that matters. if its shit, and just a sloppy tk clone, no thank you. but if it has work put into it, sure

I agree, if the quality is good, then I like it.

Yeah, I don't really play audiogames anymore. Still, a clone is not necessarily a bad thing as long as the original developer is credited for their work.

I still remember when the dev of Ultimate Life, madi abedi or however you spell the freaking name, said in his telegram channel that discussions of clones is prohibited and the way it was wrote sounds like an AI so he is basically a hipocrit because he created a clone but people cannot talk about said game being a freaking clone because of how he decided to mention that and at that point make himself look good for attention even though there was so much stolen sourcecode.

Re: now this is a discussion you don't see in klango: Thoughts on game clones?

Oh it was obscene amounts of stolen source code. Hodge podge of three completely different games (one of which was 2d!) that he combined together into some unholy hybrid. I genuinely have no idea how that thing even compiled, or if even he knew which files actually did what in the live game. Far as I know, though, he, or maybe an AI, implemented the STW inventory system. STW's code never got leaked to my knowledge, so everything that re-implemented STW was written for real at least once. The animals come from Humans Vs. Robots.
As for the idea of clones in general, I think I was one of the first people to really start using the term unauthorized code forks, due to the meaning of clone in the wider gaming world. A clone, or explicitly a concept clone, is not something I have a problem with. It is a game which happens to be very similar to another. Many first-person shooters were referred to as Doom clones in the early days of the genre. We are somewhat starved for genre variability in audiogames themselves, and many things got called clones just for operating like another existing game, even if that game was virtually alone in the genre. I think competition and iteration is good.
Unauthorized code forks, however, are games built off the backs of stolen source code. A great many of them were nothing more than rebranding or unholy combinations. Most of the TK clone lineage which eventually made its way into daily life and its successors actually was a hybrid of TK's leaked code and that of Humans Vs. Robots, made by possibility the actual developers of HVR themselves. I don't keep up enough with drama to know if HVR's code got leaked. I suppose if people want to fuck around with them in private I can't say much, but if you're out here in public, advertising it as your own work when someone like me contributed to the code you stole? I do not appreciate it, and I categorically refuse to host them or help them in any other way.

Re: now this is a discussion you don't see in klango: Thoughts on game clones?

I have somewhat changed my opinion on clones. I use to think it was pretty unfair, but as someone else said, if they are willing to give creddit to the original game, Okay, especially if the original dev of the original game has no intentions or hasn't brought it back out. Take STW for example, that was my favourite game ever, and if the clever Sam Tupy hasn't brought it back out and it was so popular, bring it back for all the die hard players, like me. I mean, it's that, or not have anything for us. But as I say, creddit where creddit is due.
