Hi all, um, I just started this thread to find out what everybody's first computer was. I don't actually mean, um, first personal computer, but, um, but like over here, um, when I, um, was in, I think it was, uh, you six? In primary school, it was like 1990 or something like that. Really, um, excuse me.
Um, all the way back then, they gave me a, a laptop, um, back then. It's not like one we have now where the screen is, the top of it, basically, you just fold the screen down. It was, um, one of those ones where the screen was really, really small. I mean, I didn't really need it, so I could, uh, there was a little volume.
Like, a windy thing on the side where I could just turn the, um, screen off and on if I needed. Which was quite handy, uh, when teachers weren't around. Um, it had a handle under, uh, the folder under when I wasn't using it. And rather than having, uh, um, CDs, it had floppy disks. Um, uh, what else did it have?
It didn't, it didn't have the internet on it. Uh, oh no, not back then. Um, it had, it did have a, a place to put, uh, a set of headphones, so I wouldn't annoy the whole class. Um, but the annoying thing was, I didn't have the choices of voices like I do now. It was just, I think it was a keynote voice, which really annoyed me. Um, it was an awful voice.

Yeah, so like I said, the voice was annoying on it, but for what it was back then, it was doing its job. And the good thing was that when I was in high school, they actually let me carry it around with me, take it home, things like that. And it was actually quite easier than carrying around a Perkins Brailler.
If something had happened to it, then I would have to carry one, I'd have to go and get it and take it back after the lessons and things like that until I got another computer. But yeah, the only thing I actually liked about it was the fact that I could turn the screen off.
On at least one occasion. But yeah, the voice was absolutely horrendous.

Well um I will mention just because it's interesting I find that my first computer well our family's first computer was probably bought when I was about probably maybe seven or eight I was fascinated because like no but only excuse me only certain families had computers and I'm like oh my god we're getting a computer I thought that was so cool not that I could use it I did get a um I did get a
speech for it but I still didn't couldn't use it a lot by myself um probably just because I haven't been hadn't been taught but I used to I used to write writing works that was an IBM um computer some something rather and um I used to go on bulletin boards the RVRB the um the blindness organization had a bulletin board anyway my um my first actual computer my computer
was given to me also in primary school probably in about grade five or six it was a Toshiba computer it actually had no hard disk so it relied just on floppies and it yeah it was a big thing and um I actually um killed it eventually because it was second hand this was second hand anyway um because there was another blind person at the school before me she had it
on the when um while it was sitting on the floor being charged up and um the screen apparently went all funny and yeah um and then in high school I got my other computer in about year nine or ten I don't know why they waited that long but they did that was a um pretty good computer for the time I was um what what sort of computer was it I can't remember uh I think it was an IBM

Sorry, yeah, I think it was an IBM, although I have a feeling it was something else, but I really can't remember. Anyway, it was a cute little laptop and it did have a hard disk, although obviously not a lot of space on there like it's in today's standards. But yeah, what else? That had Windows 3.1 on it.
I used to use that for school, obviously, and I actually had a PCMCIA Arctic voice in it, PCMCIA ICAD, but it was the Arctic voice, so it was WinVision in Windows and then ArcticVision for DOS.
So that I first got on the net with, but I wasn't able to access the net in Windows 3.1 at that stage. I actually used the internet in DOS. I used shell accounts. Yeah, so I guess Liz and everybody else, when you speak about your first computer, what operating system did you use? Yeah, I'd be curious about that.
Because Windows 3.1 was very, very limiting, of course, but it was all right for the time.

Windows 98 PC
Windows Millennium
Windows Millennium was 3.7 and it was so terrible especially online it wouldn't read anything and on Microsoft Word it was like waiting for a few hours to read a single letter I mean yeah that's it thanks

Ah, don't talk to me about Windows Millennium. No, I'm sure it's a good operating system for a lot of people and it was for me at the start too. I actually got Windows Millennium installed on my computer by a friend and it was working great guns for a while but then I was installing RealPlayer one time and
something happened during the installation and it locked my computer up. So after trying everything I eventually just gave it a hard reset and it booted up okay but from then on I kept getting this error. The file was called something like jhost.exe is not working properly and had to shut down. I can't remember exactly what the words were but and then I'd have to reboot my computer.
Each time I got the error I only could last about five minutes on the computer and then the error would come up and I'd have to reboot. It was horrible. I actually tried to Google the error. I did find it but I didn't know how to fix it. So eventually I just had to reformat and put XP on. I think it was XP. Yeah, it was XP that I put on then but that wasn't this computer.
It was another computer I had. So yeah that was my limited experience with CME. I wasn't really impressed but I mean yeah like I said when it was working it worked great. I obviously did something when I hard reset it but there was nothing else I could do. I had no option so anyway you get that.

Yeah, um, back then I had no idea what the computer was. All I know is, actually, I remember this after I posted the original thread thing, was when it turned on, the annoying little man in the computer said that it was a Keynote PC+. Okay. Um, because like I said, back then my computer knowledge was none.
Absolutely none. So I don't know what other operating systems it was on or anything like that. Anyway, I had two of those. I had one beginning of high school and two at the end of high school. They gave me an up-to-date one of those, and I never saw those again of high school, which is good. Um, the family one, I think the first one I got that could talk was an Amiga.
Amiga Talker. Yeah. Um, but my, my actual personal, personal first one was a, I still have it too, um, sitting at. Actually, my mum has it. Or she did, I don't know where it is now. But, um, it was a Hewlett Packard. Then I got my, my, my, my, my, my Dell desktop, which I'm on now.
And my laptop. So, yeah. It's interesting.

Ah, yes, the Keynote Gold speech. I always hated that. Oh, Keynote Gold. Although I can't do it, but it's awful. Um, yeah, um, I had, there was another blind boy at my high school and he had one. Oh, and it was awful because we'd, um, we'd have our private, our free periods in the same room because it was our integration room, the same room that I was saying that I kept all my textbooks.
And, oh, all I could hear when I was trying to rap was na-na-na, na-na-na. It's got such a, such a, um, what's the word? Such a boring voice. Such a really expressionless and, oh, awful that voice. But, uh, I preferred Arctic and, uh, well, even Eloquence now. But, um, no, Keynote, Keynote Gold is probably one of the worst voices.
And, and what's more is that, um, when I got my first Braille note, um, that had the Keynote voice. Luckily, I, you know, just read the Braille, but, and had the speech off, but that was annoying. Um, so fortunately, the later Braille notes got Eloquence, so that's what's in my Braille, my later Braille notes. So, yeah. Anyway, I, uh, I pity you for having a Keynote. It's awful. Ha!

Yeah, hi, this is Dmitry again, and I just remembered listening to Rachel talking about ME errors. My problem about ME errors got fixed after my sister tried to, for no apparent reason, install AOL Windows 2000 disk on the Windows Millennium. The whole thing crashed, the battery died, and I'm like, oh, cool.
Now, I can't wait until I get my XP a couple of years later. But Millennium was good. Although, every time it made those error noises, it scared the soul out of me. XP, what I liked about it, the error sounds got replaced by the piano.
But Millennium and 98 and previous ones were just like, brrng, and oh my god. Yeah.

Yeah, my BrailleNote Empower also has Keynote Gold and I haven't used that ever since I transplanted the Classic to Empower and switched to Eloquence. But that was maybe annoying, but have you heard BrailleSpeak and BrailleBlazer? I think those voices are a bit more over the top, but yeah, like Keynote Gold was
not, I don't know, kind of mechanical, but yeah, Eloquence was more, like, nicer to listen to, yeah.

When you were just talking about errors, the error sounds, I was just thinking, who's heard the XP mixes up on YouTube and stuff? I found a couple of them yesterday in the media section in the last added, so there's been a couple of these, actually a couple of them around. So if you go into YouTube, whether it be
from Klango or from your browser, type in XP Remix and you'll get a few really, really clever ones. They're great. They're basically just songs made up of the XP sounds. They're really, really clever.

Okay, here's something I never ever thought I would say in my life. Never. Because, I don't know, I just thought I'd never say it. But after hearing that, um, voice, keynote voice for years and years and years, I, I, I actually appreciate, not very much, but I do, I appreciate Microsoft Sam. I mean, he's the most boring voice I've ever heard, but anything is
way better than that keynote voice. Anything. Including Sam. But, so he, yeah, he's boring, but, um, and lifeless and all that sort of thing. And, I wish I didn't have to use him as my clango voice on my desktop, but, you know, that's how it goes. I can't have everything, but anyway, at least, if I had a choice back then, I would definitely have chosen Microsoft
Microsoft SAM.

13

Beitrag abspielen

Microsoft Sam. Yeah, I used to be able to do that imitation a lot better. But yeah, I know why you say that actually. I can totally empathize with that one. I was in Dubai a few months ago and I only had my netbook and I was using Klango and I only had the option.
Of using Microsoft Sam. Oh, actually, I believe you can actually download voices with Klango, like download different synths. But I haven't done that. But yeah, so I only had Microsoft Sam and it was bad. But yeah, I mean, I certainly don't, you know, I don't, I don't whinge about it like you other people because I guess.
You know, it's good for like, obviously, when I used Narrator, you know, when George, you know, dies, I put Narrator on just so I can see what's going on and at least have a bit of, you know, use of my computer. I'll be able to shut it down properly. Or in the case where I haven't, I've just reinstalled Windows and I haven't installed yours yet. I'll put Narrator on so I can actually.
Locate the folding, which Jaws is in. And so, you know, Sam isn't too bad. If you, if you speed it up and alter the pitch from the default, which is really bad. It's, it's certainly, it's certainly you can cope with it.

Ah, my first computer. Well, it depends if you're talking about first use of a computer or first computer at home. I will therefore tell you that I started using computer in 1994 and it was MS-DOS at the time. And we had to work with WordPerfect. Of course, we did not have the
Internet at that time. As far as my own computer, it was in 2003, XP, home. It was a HP, which was followed by a laptop. And then now this computer that I have now is still alive, still works fine, so no problem with it. And I have
now a laptop on Vista. But I could see through the years that technology has evolved a great deal since 1990. No, I started using it in 1993, not 4. So you see it's quite some time ago now.

Hey guys, it's Jonathan, otherwise known as Jonathan1991 on Clinga. My first computer that I used was a Dell desktop with Windows 2000 on it. That was back when I was 12.
It's gotta be back in 2004, I think. That was at one of my schools, and they had Windows 2000 running on a Dell desktop. And then, at home,
I was introduced to JAWS, my very first screen reader. At home, I was using Windows XP, a Dell desktop, and a laptop. I had two laptops, and now I have an HP desktop with Windows Vista, soon going to be upgraded to 7.
And now, after that, I have a Mac. I have a Macintosh computer with voiceover with the amazing Alex voice that reads. That's what I love, so, yeah.

And maybe you remember that, but the early BrailleNote Classic CDs, the people on them were so full of themselves. Like, oh my god, crystal clear Braille cells and the one and only intuitive, highly intuitive Keynote Gold. Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, when? Who told them that, you know?

Hey everybody, it's Jake. And my first computer was actually, well, I'll start at the beginning. My family's first computer was an Apple IIe.
Back in the day, it had Echo, that very excited speech. And my brother and sister and I used to play on that thing for hours.
And we loved it. We had Text Talker. And we had a bunch of games. And then one of my sisters actually sat on the computer.
And I don't know why, she was probably mad about something. Anyway, that was the end of that. And then, let's see, I got a Toshiba laptop in high school.

Um, okay, so, yeah, that was cool. My Toshiba, I've got a question, though. Um, does anybody remember the old eloquence? And, um, if so, what, what happened? Uh, why did they,
why did they switch? Um, I'm talking about the eloquence with Wei, and I believe her name was Alice. Um, I, and I'm, I'm wondering if there's any where that can be found.
Because I liked it.

My first computer was an XP machine, Gateway, Service Pack 2. It was quite nice. It had 2 gigabytes of RAM. It was given to me by my vision teacher. I remember very clearly, it was quite loud. Especially when it was referencing the hard drive.
Speaking of CD drive, I had to have various components replaced in it. But anyways, that's kind of an OT. Well, that's a bit of history for me, so... I'm out. Have a great day, slash morning, slash evening, slash night, whenever you're listening to this.

Hello, my first computer was in 2006 or 2007. I was probably around 7 or 6 years old. Anyway, my computer was a Windows 98 desktop computer and it was very slow.
It's strange. I can only say it sucks. Now I use a laptop and my family took another computer to take it to school. I have a mini book and laptop. I think we sold this old computer. I don't know.

Hey guys, it's Brian. Yeah, my first computer was an Apple IIe actually and it was pretty fun. And it's also the first computer, it's also where I learned programming on an Apple IIe. I just used the list command when I ran a program, looked at the basic lines real carefully and learned how to use text talker and stuff like that.
Actually, learned how to do some programming and stuff, which the computer will add to that. I think it was an MS-DOS machine, but I didn't have a synthesizer with it. I actually rigged up something with an Accent SA synthesizer that I had.
I mixed out the serial port and let it be read by that, which was cool. Then it was Windows 98. Well, first it was 95, then 98. Then XP. I had a brief look at 2000. It's not all that good for some weird reason, but... Now my current computer is Windows 7. The one before that was Vista, but...
An Apple IIe was my first computer because I played with it at school a lot and it was pretty fun, but... That's where I first learned programming and stuff, which is pretty awesome. So, see you later.
