What's the Best Antivirus Program for a Screen Reader User

Hi everyone,

I would like to know what antivirus programs you use. What works well with the NVDA screen reader? I seem to not have any luck with any of the antivirus programs I have tried, such as Bit Defender and Kaspersky Antivirus.

Thanks in advance.

I've been wondering the same thing. Avg used to work fine until recently. Otherwise I use windows defender.

Yeh, Windows Defender works very well with NVDA although it must be said that it only protects the Microsoft products. I've read here in this computer forum that Avast is not bad either. Although Jaws is still your best options for the majority of the anti-virus programs, even if you can only use the demo version of Jaws you have more than enough with this to look after your anti-virus programs. That's what I am using.

lol jaws? uh hem, freedom scientific are out of hour way of life. good, and i hope they never come back. the price to get jaws was totally bad. ha, ha, ha!

No comment. Moving on. I downloaded the new version of crazy party and for some reason, windows defender sees it as a virus and starts deleting. How can I change that? It didn't do it with the previous version.

yeah! same hear! i had crazy party but i unfortunately removed it with alot of my games, for i was beeing told by people to remove various games, and i stupidly removed crazy party when i wanted to play it for lol even though i had a hard time with it, now i need it badly. and i was downloading an audio described film and you no what? that, was yes, that was classed as a virus when it wasn't!

some people are still using windows defender, really? use malware bites, i find that the easiest antivirus to work with. i'll say some games are viruses when they're not, but you just go to settings and then exclusions and add one there

ah yeah i did have windows diffender, lol it seems ok but i never took interest and checked out what you could do i just left it so it'd scan everything. but i'm sure other people would of probably changed it lol although i wouldn't no if anyone had or not

In my view I found the new version of malware bites rather difficult to use. NVDA wouldn't read anything. This wasn't so with previous versions. I found exclude files in windows defender but even when I added crazy party, it stil saw it as a virus.

oh, my, god! microsoft needs contacting, seriously they need to learn a valuable lesson. i'll start sending a few emails about products i have like skype for instance, and other stuff. oh wow this'll be fun filling there heads in

Well, as I said, Windows Defender, or what's now known as Microsoft Extentions, is only protecting the products of Microsoft. It is Microsoft itself who is recommending that an anti-virus program should be installed on your computer to protect it against all kinds of viruses and worms that are circulating so as to protect your computer and to give your computer a long life.

I've used Eset NOD32 for about 10 years now. It's accessible, and one of the best rated antiviruses.

I personally hate windows defender, because it detects a lot of false positives (including nearly every game made in BGT, and some other scripting languages like AutoIt).

You may want to know that before windows 10, windows defender was not treated as antivirus, but rather as antispyware software, and as such it's not recommended to rely solely on windows defender in the versions of Windows below 10, because it won't provide the full protection of an antivirus.

I've used AVG like 10 years ago for a very short time, and as far as I can remember, it was accessible at least mostly. I also tried avast 6 around that time, and it was accessible, and it was a good antivirus in my opinion, but I personally think that they ruined it since. even the version 7 started having false positives, and the accessibility was broken.

There's no way for you to tell windows defender not to automatically capture things, and to make it ask you if you want to let it quarantine it. the only thing you could do is: disable realtime protection, which will stop it from automatically watching for viruses in the background, and thus stop it from automatically capturing files.

There's also a registry hack that lets you disable defender completely, but I'd advise against it, because if you don't have any other antivirus software, you'll be left without any protection, and that's not smart, especially in this day and age, where you have all sorts of malware floating around, and all sorts of malware attacks are happening.

wow lol all the good memories of the programmes i've used.

Eset NOD32, sorry but what's that? Yes I do agree, there are some unpleasant things floating around. Although I would be clueless when it comes to false positives. I would also agree that avg was accessible at that time such as ten years ago. But technology does change rather quickly in the meantime.

oh it does, damn i wish some of the old things i had were still as they are today

I have a so called PC guard installed, which resets the computer to the state in which it was before the guard was last turned off if you shut down the computer. I think that should do as an anti virus. So, if I get some stupid virus, I just have to reboot it.

Thanks for the information. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, so thanks for informing me that Windows Defender treats BGT projects, such as Crazy Party, like a virus. With that said, I may use the pro edition of Malware Bytes.

Thanks.

Re: What's the Best Antivirus Program for a Screen Reader User

Hello,
I would reccomend Avast internet security. It is layed out like a webpage, and there fore works very well with a screen reader. I have tested it quite extensively with both JAWS and NVDA. Private message me if you would like more information.

Re: What's the Best Antivirus Program for a Screen Reader User

If I had to say these days, Windows defender works well. The best anti-virus, I will thoroughly maintain, is common sense. Don't spell website addresses incorrectly. Check twice the spelling. Don't click just any random link you see. The rest of it should be well controlled by your anti-virus assuming you've done all of these things well enough. It's been years and I don't have any viruses on my computer specifically because I follow the steps above strictly.

Re: What's the Best Antivirus Program for a Screen Reader User

windows defender.cBut there are too many false possitives, because certain audiogames and other things are unsigned so it'll flag them, at one point when I had macafy it blocked AAC:

Re: What's the Best Antivirus Program for a Screen Reader User

The one time I used malware bites, it killed jaws by getting rid of jfw.exe.
